I decided to remix some 3D models. My sister wanted me to 3D print a turtle, but I didn’t want to just download the model from online and print it; it needed to be personalized.
I found this turtle model on Thingiverse, and I had a 3D scan of myself from an earlier project using Skanect and an Xbox Kinect. Now it was time to combine the two. For this, I used Autodesk Meshmixer. The first line on their website states that it is, “a free tool for making crazy-ass 3D stuff without too much hassle.” Perfect.
The process was quite easy. I simply selected the areas of each of the models that I wanted to remove and then erased them and filled in the missing surface. Then I arranged the new head into position, and combined the two models into one and converted it to a solid. Finally, I used the sculpt tools to smooth out the seems. The end result, a creepy looking Adam turtle. Exactly the effect I was going for.
